10 Creative ideas using reversible Gift Wrap

So many ideas with just one sheet of gift wrap…

Gift Wrap by Jane Means

When you think of gift wrap you automatically think of wrapping paper for presents, however there’s a myriad of projects and ideas that you an do with you sheet of gift wrapping paper, especially if it’s reversible (mine are). Having just designed my first collection of papers, I thought I’d share 10 creative ideas using reversible gift wrap

Papercraft continues to be a huge trend and we are surrounded with an abundance of lanterns, pom poms and pinwheels. All which can be made with your own fair hands

Pinwheels can easily be made by pleating a square of paper. I love to wire a bead or button and add to the centre for an additional decoration. On hot summer days these can be glued on to a wooden stick (you’ll always find these in your favourite coffee house) and transformed in to a fan

  1. Cards and Envelopes

Cards can easily be made by adding a decorative page of gift wrap on to a piece of card, securing it in place with some ribbon or double sided tape. Do be warned that you are not allowed to sell these unless the designer of the gift wrap has authorized the use. I also love to line envelopes too

  1.  Decoupage

This is a wonderful way to decorate a photo frame, plantpot, a tray, waste paper bin, a storage box, or even some clothes pegs. Intricte details can be cut out and glued on to item and sealed with layers of clear varnish.

  1. Cones for kids

Colonial Grey Gift Wrap by Jane Means

Sweets for childrens parties can be placed in to homemade cones. Cut a triangle of reversible paper and stick 2 sides together with double sided tape. You can decorate the top with lace or ribbon, or seal the whole cone

  1. Cake band or decorative cups

Decorate a cake or paper cups with a band of pretty paper and secure with double sided tape and ribbon. It will look so gorgeous that you wont want to eat it

  1. Paper Lampshade

We love this Origami shade.  Image courtesy of Postris

Lampshades can be given a new lease of life with a piece of decorative paper and some spray adhesive. You can also trim the edges with some ribbon or ric rac for that additional eye catching feature. Do be careful not to catch the shades with the hot bulbs or leave them unattended.

  1. DIY Pillow boxes

Handmade pillow boxes can easily be made by adding paper on to a cardboard tube with spray adhesive. Fold in the 2 sides after you’ve placed your gift inside and add ribbon

  1. Origami Lanterns

Pretty little lanterns and decorative creations can be made by following a few steps. I love to check out the Japanese blogs for Origami tutorials and ideas

  1. Paper flowers

These are hugely popular and I love to see a wall or backdrop full of these beautiful decorations.
Petals can easily be curved by using a pencil.

I also love these Japanese pleated flowers and will be covering this tutorial in a future blog post and in our Handmade Decorations workshops in Singapore

  1. Paper bunting

Bunting can easily be made by cutting triangles out of a sheet of paper and adding them on to a length of ribbon with glue. You could also use patterned scissors for a scalloped detail. If you’ve got a sewing machine try stitching hearts together.

The 4 designs are unique as they are cleverly designed so you can get up to 6 different looks with a single sheet, using Jane’s clever techniques.

The papers are reversible and printed in the UK on high quality paper. We cannot wait to start using them on our Gift Wrapping Courses

Jane says “I’m delighted to be launching this first ever collection. For years I have been thinking about designing my own gift wrap but felt the market was already flooded with Gift Wrap.

It was only when I had that lightbulb moment when I realised I’d designed something unique, that I decided the time was right”

Papercraft DIY and Pinwheels

If you’re clearing out your craft room and have lots of little remnants of wrapping paper (which you’re reluctant to throw away), we have just the project for you

urple pinwheels

It involves a little time and patience but this papercraft DIY project is great fun, and will keep the kids happy for hours!diy papercraft

With my love for luxurious wrapping papers (I call it this addiction paperlove ), I thought I’d dedicate this post to the classic ‘Pinwheel’ and ‘Paper Fan’ and show you how to make them.

Jane Means fan box

We have been making these for years on my Gift Wrapping Workshops, and they look great when added to a box or a circular tin.

Here I’ve pleated the paper before wrapping a simple box to get a really dramatic and polished effect

Recently at the Country Living Fair, I wanted to create some fun projects as we have so many kids popping along, plus I wanted to bring in the recycling and Eco aspect to this

pinwheel class

To make a paper fan or a pinwheel, all you need is some pretty paper, a small piece of wire or cord, and double sided tape (you can also add a button if you wish)

If you have the time and the patience, why not make a set and make a decorative wreath out of a different collage of pinwheels?

These pinwheel flags are the perfect accessory for kids parties, and you can also add decorative buttons for a dramatic effect,  Simply wire or stick them straight on to straws or sticks.

Apologies my blog post has been late coming, I’m involved with a huge project which I hope I will be able to tell the world about and go public shortly…watch this space!

Jane Means to open London Shop at Clifton Nurseries

We’re delighted to be adding a Haberdashery Closet in the capital.  We are often mobbed at our London shows including Top Drawer, Spirit Fairs and Country Living

Jane Means at Clifton Nurseries

Haberdashery Closet at Jane Means

For years I have been asked where is your London shop, and after opening our doors in Lincoln in 2012, I always wanted the next quirky outlet to be in London, but it had to be the right place and not necessarily a permanent fixture on a busy High Street.  Last year we starting stocking our ribbons at Clifton Nurseries which is London’s Oldest Nursery over 160 years old. It’s one of my favourite places in Central London, and you enter this hidden oasis in Little Venice with flowers, topiary, decorations, furniture and gardens.

You will also see Matthew Wilson wandering around there who is not only the presenter on the Channel 4 programme ‘The Landscape Man’ and a regular panellist on Radio 4’s Gardeners Question Time, but also the Managing Director of Clifton Nurseries. (Image courtesy of Achica Living )

Recently I have been doing several photo shoots there and have done gift wrapping services and demonstrations in the Quince Tree Cafe there which have been very popular.

They have regular parties, launches and events at Clifton Nurseries, and even Jimmy Choo had an event there last year filled with celebrities.

Luckily I live nearby and love to pop to the cafe (a sunny conservatory surrounded by flowers) for a spot of brunch outside before the buzzing lunch crowd arrive.

The Ribbon and Wrapping Room at Clifton Nurseries will be  a pop up shop through the summer, stocked full of ribbons, haberdashery, trimmings, bespoke papers, decorations, gift boxes and bags and other gift wrapping accessories.

We will also be offering complimentary gift wrapping services on selective days, and be hosting several events during the summer months.

We are also looking for some friendly part time staff to cover this opportunity and would love to hear from you if you’re interested in joining us. Just email us at info@janemeans.co.uk  (Please do not use the comments box or contact Clifton Nurseries)

Craft Ideas for the Fortnum and Mason Stationery Event

I’m really looking forward to being involved in the new stationery room launch at Fortnum and Mason in Piccadilly next week.

fortnum and mason ribbon

Our ribbons are stocked in the store and I will be gift wrapping live in their revamped stationery room on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th April.

As a ribbon stockist of the store i’ve already had a glimpse at their new collections and have been drooling over their Italian gift wrap… I have always been addicted to luxury stationery and have always have a good stock in the shop.

With it being stationary week in early April I thought I would share some creative paper projects which are easy to do and great for kids too.

Even if you don’t have a supply of gorgeous wrapping paper you can simply print your own if you have a PC. Type a message and print it out on A4 paper which is ideal for small gifts

I’m currently involved with several exciting projects which will be out later in the year, and wanted to highlight how easy it is to add personal and creative touches to gift wrapping

You can easily make paper Roses by cutting a swirl out of a circle.
 paper swirl
Wrap it around your finger and let go and a rose will form. You can also add a small amount of blue or double sided tape to secure them

I’ve also cut out scalloped circles and this can be easily done by folding a square piece of paper into quarters and triangles then cutting a curve so when you open it your scalloped design is revealed

I have layered several of these scallops on top of each other in various sizes and secured them with a button and wire
